It is a very popular image, the mystics of the three monkeys, each one of them with his hands concealed his mouth, ears and eyes, respectively.
It has been used many times in advertisements, marketing items, decorative figures, shirts, etc. .... but they are a piece of wood sculpture at the shrine of Toshogu (1636), built in honor of Tokugawa Ieyasu, located in Nikko, north of Tokyo in Japan.
The names of the monkeys are Kikazaru (not heard), Iwazaru (no speech) and Mizaru (not seen), referring to a Japanese pun, as saru meaning monkey.
The legend say that the three monkeys were the messengers sent by the gods to give away the evil deeds of humans with a magic spell, with which each had two virtues and defects, and is represented in the following order:
Kikazaru Represented the monkey deaf, was in charge of using the visual sense to watch everyone who performed evil deeds to pass it to Mizaru by voice.
Mizaru Mizaru was the monkey blind. Did not need his sense of sight, as they take charge of the messages that had Kikazaru until the third monkey Iwazaru.
Iwazaru The third of three monkeys, the dumb ape, Iwazaru that conveys the message of Mizaru to decide what punishment the gods of the unfortunate is added and observed that this might be accomplished.
